A Montreal woman has been sentenced to just under three years in prison for the attempted murder of her daughter in 2010.

Johra Kaleki, 42, was charged after she attacked her then 19-year-old daughter with a meat cleaver at the family’s home in Dorval.

Her daughter, Bahar Ebrahimi, had gone out with friends to a nightclub. When she returned home after midnight, she was attacked by her mother.

Police were called to the house to investigate a domestic disturbance and found Ebrahimi, the eldest of Kaleki’s four daughters, suffering from severe head injuries and lacerations on other parts of her body.

Prosecutors had asked the court for Kaleki to be sentenced to 10 years in prison. She had been out on bail as she awaited sentencing.

Crown prosecutor Anne Gauvin said she needs more time to review today’s sentencing decision before deciding whether to appeal.

She said the judge took into consideration the fact that the victim had reconciled with her mother.
